What is a cornice made of?

Cornices are typically made from of three main materials

Plaster

A traditional material that has been used for decades, most Australian homes have a plaster styled cornice. Plaster cornices offer sharp detail and a solid feel. They are ideal for heritage homes and decorative interiors but are heavier and require professional installation.

EPS ( Expanded Polystyrene)

Lightweight and cost effective, EPS cornices are made from foam beads that are moulded into shape. They are easy to install and paint, making them a popular choice for DIY projects. However, they can be less durable than other options

XPS (Extruded Polystyrene)

Modern and moisture resistant, XPS ceiling cornices are manufactured from high density foam. They offer a smooth finish, are more durable than EPS and are perfect for clean modern designs. This is the material we use at Cornice Pro for its excellent strength to weight ratio and refined look

Which type of cornice is best?

It all depends on your needs

Plaster cornices

Are best for traditional or ornate interiors where fine details and heritage style matter most. However, they are heavier and prone to breaking, styles are also quick to become obsolete leaving you stuck trying to find a replacement years later. Plaster can be tricky to install and would require a professional.

EPS cornices

Are Ideal for budget friendly , DIY applications . They are light and easy to work with but not as durable or refined in appearance.
